The base commissary is closed on Monday and Tuesday. And since we don't (read: try not to) go to the store on Sunday, I have to make sure that we have everything we need by Saturday. Saturday is the last day I'm thinking about groceries. Saturday is all about family. So that means I have Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday to think about groceries.
But I always think about groceries on Monday. Isn't that normal? I mean, after the weekend I clean the house and plan the week. It's normal to need to grocery shop. So Monday and Tuesday I'm usually just getting by with the fresh stuff.
Yesterday as it continued to pour rain (and I hadn't gone to the store yet) I looked around my cupboards at what we could have for dinner. Hmmm. I had options, but nothing that sounded easy or yummy.
I decided that we should just order pizza. Its something we haven't done since coming to the "Rock" (ooooh- I feel like an insider calling Kodiak that). I hear they have a yummy place in town but town is 6 miles from my home. For a homebody, that seems like a long way to go pick up pizza. So the homebody (and the budget conscious side of me) won.
And I made our own pizza. Whole Wheat Pizza. Yum. If you want the recipe, let me know. It's quick too. The dough has a few ingredients (flour, water, yeast, and oil) and only needs to raise 1 hr and then you roll it out, top it, and bake it. It was a hit (but then again pizza is a favooorite in this home!) I only had ingredients for the basic pepperoni pizza (we usually prefer bbq chicken), but it was still fantastic.
A hint for yummy homemade pizza... use corn meal under the pizza when you bake it. Very authentic!

Okay... you made me change my dinner plans! Pizza it is. I'm all over the Hormel Turkey Pepperoni though. Have you had it? Only 4 g of fat in 22 pieces! It is so spicy good, not greasy either. LOVE IT!
ReplyDeleteWhen did you move to Alcatraz? The Rock... right? Does it feel like Alcatraz being on an island?? LOL!
We make Pizza every Tuesday and Friday :) That's the Italian in us I geuss (no-just pretending) But, ever since we stopped buying Dominos and our 5 Buck pizza burned down this week, we will continue to make them. Your mom and Aunt Arlene gave me the recipe when I got married-♥
ReplyDeleteYum!!! that pizza looks great. I am really hoping to make more homemade dinners. That is going to be my new years resolution. It will be so much better for Allen and I
