The Goose is Getting Fat

Christmas will arrive in 19 days. I am surprised.

I've been collecting all that is necessary for Christmas, but I still did a double-take when I saw there were only 19 days left.

As Jake and I are away from family and friends this year, we've been thinking about new traditions (is it possible to have a new tradition?) we might start.

I'd love to hear from you about what you do that makes Christmas special. So... would you mind picking one (or a few) of your favorite Christmas traditions and sharing them with me?

(Even those of you that don't usually comment... give it a whirl this time!)

  1. hi amy! we are going to start this Christmas doing a birthday party for Jesus...we wrap a present for Him each year that is a box filled with the "gifts" we will give Him during the year - like being more kind, helpful, etc...the first present we open on Christmas morning is either a picture of Jesus or a little figurine of Him - to keep us focused so that hopefully greed doesn't set in...by the way, thank you for suggesting the movie Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium. I liked it so much I just posted about it. It definitely inspired me to have more fun and be more fun and not so serious all the time. P.S. Thanks for the compliment about Molly Mahoney.

  2. Hi Amy & family!

One of our very favorite traditions is "Christmas Camp-Out." It should really be called "Christmas Camp-In", I suppose. We usually choose the Friday before Christmas and we camp out in the living room eating goodies, drinking eggnog and watching our favorite Christmas movies. Our must-sees are A Muppet Christmas Carol and A Christmas Carol with Patrick Stewart. The kids all fall asleep in the living room and mom and dad retire to the bedroom.
Another tradition is our Advent Wreath with 3 purple candles and 1 pink candle. The pink candle is for the 3rd Sunday, called Gaudete (joyful) Sunday. We light one candle each Sunday of Advent and read from the Christmas Story (the Gospel of Luke.) The first candle is the Prophesy Candle, the second is the Bethlehem Candle, the third is the Shepherds Candle and the fourth is the Angels Candle.
Nice to hear from you! Have a wonderful Advent and Christmas season! ~Bridget

  3. Ben and I have been watching Christmas movies every weekend. I don't know that it will become a tradition but we have really enjoyed the time together and Christmas movies always have such a great meaning to them (well almost always I guess Die Hard doesn't have a great message.)

  4. I loved reading everyone eles comments. I am going to have to start some new traditions too. We always order chinese food the night we put up the tree, cause the house is a mess and I don't want to cook so I love this tradition. Also on Christmas eve I make shepherd's pie and then we unwrap our new p.j.s and Shawn reads the Christmas story while the kids act it out.
